Vida y obra

Donald Charles Lavoie nació el 4 de abril de 1951 y se graduó en 1973 en el Worcester Polytechnic Institute como Bachelor en informática, un punto de partida inusual para quien luego sería economista. En la New York University pasó a la economía política y se doctoró en 1981 con Israel Kirzner, con un trabajo que reabría el debate sobre el cálculo socialista de los años treinta. Ese mismo año entró como Assistant Professor en la George Mason University, donde permaneció hasta su muerte. De su tesis doctoral surgieron en 1985 los dos libros que lo dieron a conocer: «Rivalry and Central Planning» en Cambridge University Press, una reconstrucción histórico-científica, y «National Economic Planning: What is Left?», un análisis incisivo de los planes de política industrial de los años de Reagan. Ambos volúmenes rehabilitaron a Mises frente al consenso de la época, según el cual el argumento del cálculo había quedado zanjado por el modelo de Lange-Lerner. A finales de los años ochenta, Lavoie llevó a cabo, junto con Richard Ebeling, el giro hermenéutico: apoyándose en Hans-Georg Gadamer, leyó el mercado como un proceso de discusión basado en la comprensión, y no como un mero mecanismo de asignación. Esto le valió duras críticas del sector de Rothbard y Hoppe en el Mises Institute, pero lo convirtió en director de tesis de una generación influyente, entre ella Peter Boettke, Steven Horwitz y David Prychitko. En el Mercatus Center, el centro de investigación de la GMU, creó el programa «Social and Organizational Learning» y trabajó tempranamente sobre el hipertexto y el groupware como herramientas cognitivas. En la primavera de 2001 se le diagnosticó cáncer de páncreas; el 6 de noviembre de 2001 murió, a los cincuenta años, de un ictus. Póstumamente apareció en su honor el volumen colectivo «Markets, Information and Communication», editado por Boettke y Chamlee-Wright.
