Vie et œuvre

Donald Charles Lavoie naquit le 4 avril 1951 et obtint en 1973 un bachelor en informatique au Worcester Polytechnic Institute, un point de départ inhabituel pour un futur économiste. À l'université de New York, il passa à l'économie politique et soutint en 1981 une thèse sous la direction d'Israel Kirzner, qui reprenait à nouveaux frais le débat sur le calcul des années 1930. La même année, il rejoignit la George Mason University comme assistant professor, où il resta jusqu'à sa mort. De sa thèse naquirent en 1985 les deux livres qui le firent connaître : « Rivalry and Central Planning » chez Cambridge University Press, une reconstruction d'histoire des sciences, et « National Economic Planning: What is Left? », une discussion incisive des projets de politique industrielle des années Reagan. Les deux ouvrages réhabilitèrent Mises contre le consensus de l'époque, selon lequel l'argument du calcul aurait été réglé par le modèle de Lange-Lerner. À la fin des années 1980, Lavoie opéra, avec Richard Ebeling, le tournant herméneutique : se référant à Hans-Georg Gadamer, il lut le marché comme un processus de discussion fondé sur la compréhension, et non comme un simple mécanisme d'allocation. Cela lui valut de vives critiques du camp Rothbard-Hoppe au Mises Institute, mais fit de lui le directeur de thèse d'une génération influente, parmi laquelle Peter Boettke, Steven Horwitz et David Prychitko. Au Mercatus Center, le centre de recherche de la GMU, il mit sur pied le programme « Social and Organizational Learning » et travailla tôt sur l'hypertexte et les logiciels collaboratifs comme outils cognitifs. Au printemps 2001, un cancer du pancréas lui fut diagnostiqué ; le 6 novembre 2001, il mourut à cinquante ans des suites d'un accident vasculaire cérébral. Le recueil « Markets, Information and Communication » parut à titre posthume en son honneur, sous la direction de Boettke et Chamlee-Wright.
