Vita e opera

Roger Wayne Garrison nacque nel 1944 a Joplin, Missouri, e crebbe dapprima lontano dall'economia. I suoi primi studi lo portarono nel 1967 alla University of Missouri-Rolla, dove si laureò in ingegneria elettrotecnica. In seguito prestò servizio come ufficiale della United States Air Force, da ultimo con il grado di Captain, e lavorò al Rome Laboratory della Griffiss Air Force Base come ingegnere di sistema per le contromisure elettroniche. Solo dopo il congedo si dedicò all'economia politica: conseguì nel 1974 un master alla University of Missouri-Kansas City e nel 1981 il dottorato alla University of Virginia sotto Leland B. Yeager. Nel 1978 entrò alla Auburn University in Alabama come instructor, divenne assistant professor nel 1981, associate professor nel 1988 e professore ordinario nel 1996. Ad Auburn insegnò per oltre tre decenni macroeconomia e teoria monetaria, fino al pensionamento. Il suo contributo principale è la macroeconomia fondata sul capitale: una sintesi grafica del triangolo della struttura di produzione di Hayek, del diagramma di mercato intertemporale di Rothbard e di una frontiera consumo-investimento modificata. Con questo strumentario rese la teoria austriaca del ciclo economico compatibile con i moderni manuali di economia e mostrò, in un unico insieme di diagrammi, come la politica monetaria distorca la struttura del capitale intertemporale. La sua opera principale „Time and Money. The Macroeconomics of Capital Structure“ uscì nel 2001 presso Routledge e gli valse nello stesso anno il Vernon Smith Prize for the Advancement of Austrian Economics. Nel 2003 fu il primo Hayek Visiting Fellow alla London School of Economics, nel 2004 presidente della Society for the Development of Austrian Economics. Fu inoltre per molti anni Adjunct Scholar al Mises Institute. Garrison morì il 13 febbraio 2026, sei giorni dopo il suo 82° compleanno, ad Auburn, Alabama. La sua eredità è il merito didattico di aver tradotto una tradizione di teoria del capitale, a lungo considerata verbale e di difficile accesso, in un linguaggio visivo elegante, plasmando così un'intera generazione di macroeconomisti austriaci.
