Kraków is the second-largest city in Poland and lies on the upper Vistula in southern Poland. In 1795 the city was assigned to the crown land of Galicia within the Austrian Empire, and after changing rule and independence movements it was finally annexed by Austria in 1846. During this period Kraków developed into a centre of Polish art and culture. Carl Menger passed his school-leaving examination here and in 1867 received his doctorate in law at the University of Kraków, the second-oldest university in Central Europe. Paul Narcyz Rosenstein-Rodan was born here in 1902.
