Brünn (today Brno) is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic and lies in southern Moravia. Brünn was often contested in the past; the Battle of Austerlitz, for instance, took place nearby in 1805. In 1839 a railway connection to Vienna was established. This too helped Brünn grow into a strong industrial city from the nineteenth century onwards. Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk was born here in 1851 but, after the death of his father, moved with his mother to Vienna at the age of six. Richard Schüller was likewise born in Brünn and grew up here before setting out to study in Vienna.
